Focus on the Fundamentals

One of my favorite movies is Glory Road. This movie was inspired by a true story of Texas Western’s Coach Don Haskins (played by Josh Lucas), who led the first all-black starting lineup team to the 1966 NCAA national basketball championship title. In the movie, one of Haskins key players was Bobby Joe Hill (played by Derek Luke). One of the most powerful scenes in the movie comes when Bobby Joe Hill showcases his skills on the basketball court. Coach Haskins benches him and tells him that he must focus on the fundamentals - he calls it fundamental basketball. That’s powerful.

Many times in life we miss the real essence of living because we forget the fundamentals. The fundamentals in life are all about who we become rather than what we do. It’s about character and credibility. It’s about trust and respect. It’s about commitment and responsibility. It’s about truth and honesty. It’s about people, not products. It’s about quality of life, not performance. It’s about relationships, not results. It’s about making a difference, not making money. It’s about ethics, not profits. Those are the fundamentals we should focus on.
